What kinds of cream can a private label cream manufacturer actually make for you?

BioB manufactures oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions and anhydrous balms across the full viscosity range, from a light pumpable lotion to a dense butter-textured cream, filled into jars, tubes, airless pumps and pump bottles. The emulsion type, the viscosity and the package are one decision, not three.

Oil-in-water (O/W): the default for most face and body creams

In an O/W emulsion the water phase is continuous and the oil is dispersed in it, which is why O/W creams feel lighter, break faster and leave less residue. They are easier to thicken and adjust, they carry water-soluble botanical glycerin extracts directly in the external phase, and they accept a wider range of emulsifier systems. The trade-off: the continuous phase is water, so the preservative system has to be robust and it has to be challenged.

Water-in-oil (W/O): heavier, more occlusive, harder to stabilise

Invert the phases and the oil becomes continuous. W/O creams sit longer on the surface, resist wash-off and read as richer. They also need low-HLB emulsifier systems, tighter control of the internal phase, and usually an electrolyte in the water droplets to hold the emulsion together. Water-soluble actives now sit in the internal phase, which changes how they are dosed. W/O is the right call for barrier-style and cold-weather products, and the wrong one for a fast-absorbing daily face cream.

Anhydrous balms and butters: no water phase at all

A balm is a wax, butter and ester matrix with no water in it. With no water phase the preservation problem changes shape entirely and the formulation problem becomes hardness, slip and drag. Balms carry oil-soluble botanical extracts well and water-soluble ones not at all — the most common surprise when a brand converts a cream concept into a balm.

Packaging formats, and the trade-off each one carries

Jar (glass or PET)
Takes any viscosity, including the ones a pump cannot move, and presents best on shelf. Costs you the most in headspace oxygen, repeated finger contact and secondary packaging. Plan the preservative system for an open jar, not a closed one.
Tube (LDPE or barrier laminate)
Efficient, hygienic and cheap to decorate. Best for standard to rich viscosities; a fluid cream slumps and pools at the shoulder. If the formula carries essential oils or a strong fragrance, specify a barrier laminate rather than plain LDPE.
Airless pump
Minimal headspace oxygen and no dip tube, which suits oxidation-sensitive oils and leaner preservative systems. The viscosity window is narrow: too thick and the piston will not follow the product, too thin and it floods. Component cost and availability are both higher.
Pump or disc-top bottle
The workhorse for lotions and fluid creams, and the cheapest route to an 8 oz and larger body format. The product has to draw reliably up a dip tube at cold-room temperature, not just at 25 °C on a bench.
Companion formats run on the same quality system: serums, lotions, sprays, body and hair care, plus ingestible liquids, capsules, tablets and powders.

On timing, honestly: we do not publish a lead time in weeks, because for a cream program it is almost never the batching that sets the date. It is the packaging. Jars, tubes, closures, airless assemblies and decorated components each carry their own availability, and airless components are the item most likely to move your ship date. Once your components are confirmed, so is your date — and not usefully before.

We make the botanical extracts that go into the cream

BioB Manufacturing is the finished-goods arm of Bio-Botanica, which has manufactured botanical extracts since 1972. The extract in your cream and the cream itself come from the same company, in the same New York facility. That is not a marketing line — it changes three practical things.
  • One origin to document. The identity and specification of the botanical input do not arrive from a broker with a supply chain you cannot see behind.
  • Formulation control. If a glycerin extract is fighting the emulsion, we can change the extract, not just the emulsifier. Most contract manufacturers can only do the second.
  • No second import exposure. The actives are not a separate offshore purchase order sitting behind your finished goods.
Glycerin-based botanical extracts are used in topical formulations. Alcohol-free extracts are for ingestible products, and we make those too — which is why a brand launching a cream and a companion supplement can do both here.

A cream is only as good as the paperwork behind it, because the paperwork is what you will be asked for by a retailer, an insurer or a regulator. Every batch leaves with a documentation package, not just a pallet.

  • Batch and lot traceability from finished goods back through the batch record to the botanical inputs.
  • Stability data generated on your formula, under defined conditions, over an agreed schedule.

MoCRA: who is responsible for what on your cream

Under the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act the manufacturer registers and biennially renews the facility. The brand is normally the Responsible Person: it lists the product with FDA and maintains the safety substantiation records. Almost no manufacturer page states this split. Here it is.

Why evaluate a US cream manufacturer against an offshore quote?

Because the unit price on an offshore quote is the one number in the deal you can actually control from a purchase order. Everything sitting between that price and your warehouse is set by other people, and it moves.
Tariff and duty treatment changes, on a schedule nobody at your company sets. Ocean freight moves with capacity and with events on the water. Port congestion and customs holds add time no supplier contract prevents. Currency moves between the quote and the invoice. Should my cream go in a jar, a tube or an airless pump?

A jar takes any viscosity and presents best, but exposes the product to air and repeated finger contact. A tube is efficient and hygienic but needs enough body that the cream does not slump. An airless pump protects oxidation-sensitive oils, but only within a narrow viscosity window and at a higher component cost.

Can I supply my own packaging components?

Yes. Brand-supplied jars, tubes, closures and airless assemblies can be run, and the minimum for that arrangement is confirmed at quote because it depends on the component and the line it runs on. Send specifications and physical samples early so compatibility can be assessed against the actual component rather than a generic one.

Should I start from a stock formula or develop a custom one?

Start from a stock formula when the product is not your differentiator and speed is. Take the semi-custom route when a proven base needs different actives, emollients, fragrance or viscosity. Go full custom when the formula itself is the reason a customer chooses you. All three run in the same facility on the same quality system.

Where do the botanical actives in your creams come from?

We do the facility side and supply the data; the listing and the substantiation file stay with you.

Do you run stability and packaging compatibility testing?

Yes, and they are treated as two different questions. Stability asks whether the emulsion holds under defined conditions over time. Compatibility asks whether it holds in the specific component you chose. A cream that is stable in a beaker can still fail in a particular jar liner, closure or airless assembly, so both are run.
